Book Review

This book was on my Goodreads TBR shelf for a long time and when I was going through and deleting books that I knew I was never going to read, I came across it and thought that I would reserve it from the library.
First of all, I love the cover of this book! It is simple and elegant, and without reading anything about it, you automatically know that it is a historical fiction.
I will admit that this book was a little bit slow to get into, and in the beginning there is a lot of interaction of Kate with her mother (and her mother is beyond awful). But as the story unfolds and there are more secrets revealed it makes more sense and it is more enjoyable.
We follow Kate (who her family calls Kitty, even though she insists on being called Kate) who is a young woman trying to find her way and follow her dreams. She is determined that she is not going to get married, she is simply going to see the world and be independent like her Aunt. She dreams of travelling to India with this particular Aunt.
Other than India, Kate dreams of going to Blackmoore, the home of her childhood friends' grandfather, in which they travel to each summer as children. Kate has never been allowed to join these childhood trips and now that she is older, Henry, who promised to take her one day, is fulfilling his promise and they are set to leave.
Kate's mother decides to make a bargain with Kate that if she wishes to go to India, then she is to receive three proposals and reject them, then she would be granted permission to go. On arriving she decides that she agreed to an impossible bargain and she would need to ask Henry to propose to her three times and then she would have succeeded. Henry, who is supposed to be courting a young miss St. Claire, agreed to this if she would give him three truths of his choosing in return.
As their time at Blackmoore continues we learn a lot about Kate and the reasons that she is the way she is - why she decided not to marry, why she now wants to be called Kate instead of Kitty. As she is telling Henry the truths, we get a flashback to the event or time in question so we know what is coming.
Kate and Henry are very close, but you want them to be closer. They are completely perfect for each other, they just seem to be blind to the fact. As time goes on and they share proposals and truths, it becomes clear that they are in love they either just don't realise, or they are pretending not to be.

I found the romance in this book to be frustrating, but in a good way. All you want is the two of them to fall in love and live happily ever after, even after you know the reason why Kate wont let it happen, even though she wants to. We share a secret with Kate that Henry doesn't know. and it is enough to break your heart.

I really enjoyed this book and I would encourage all readers who enjoy a good romance and historical fiction to give this one a go!
Thank you for reading my review of Blackmoore and until next time, happy reading!

Source: Borrowed From Library
Length: 12 discs,14 hours & 32 minutes

On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there are almost no clues.
As Truman Capote reconstructs the murder and the investigation that led to the capture, trial and execution of the killers, he generates both mesmerising suspense and astonishing empathy.

Book Review:

I have heard really amazing things about this book so when I noticed that it was on my Goodreads' TBR shelf I reserved it from the library in audio book format and began listening to it in the car.
I will start off by saying that I am glad that I got this book. I really enjoyed it.

Capote has done an extensive amount of research in order to write this book and it shows. The writing is thorough and informative. It is good, if not a little creepy, to get into the minds of two cold blooded killers in America's history.
I am fascinated by true crime stories and this one kept me interested. As much as the detail and the amount of research that has gone into it was impressive, in parts I was wishing that there was not so much as it seemed to go off on tangents in places, for example, when talking about the prisoners on death row, Capote went into details about the crimes that a number of the others committed - which was terrible - but it was not part of the story that was being told currently. It went back and forward from the current story, to other stories along the way. For me this made it drag along a bit, but I didn't mind completely as what I was reading was interesting.
It followed the complete process from the family's life, and the lives of the murderers, before the crime was committed. The crime itself and the discovery of the victims. The investigation from the police point of view as well as what the criminals did in the time between committing the crime and getting caught; and finally, their time in court and in prison before their execution. I can't imagine the time it took to gather all the information and then write this amazing piece of literature.

The reader of this audio book, William Hope, was amazing. His voice was not boring at all which was great, he changed his voice for all of the main characters, so you could keep up with who was speaking by just listening to the voice. It made the experience of listening to an audio book all the more entertaining.

Reading (or rather, listening to) this book, made me realise how much I missed true crime stories. I think I need to get my hands on books in this genre more often.

Thank you for reading my review of In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. If you have not read this book, I highly recommend that you get onto it, ASAP! If you have read it, I would love to hear your thoughts on it in the comments below!

About the Author:

Truman Capote was an American writer whose non-fiction, stories, novels and plays are recognised literary classics, including the novella Breakfast at Tiffany's (1958) and In Cold Blood (1965), which he labelled a "non-fiction novel." At least 20 films and t.v. dramas have been produced from Capote's novels, stories and screenplays.
He was born Truman Streckfus Persons. His parents divorced when he was four and he went to live with his mother's relatives in Monroeville, Alabama. He was a lonely child who learned to read and writeby himself before entering school. He was then adopted by his mother's new husband, Joseph Capote, and his name was changed. He graduated from high school in 1942 and he began working as a copy boy at The New Yorker. During which time he also began his writing career, publishing many short stories.
He remained prolific in the 1950's and 60's producing both fiction and non-fiction. His masterpiece, In Cold Blood was published in 1966 and became a worldwide success. After this success, he published rarely and suffered from alcohol addiction. He died in 1984 at the age of 59. (Goodreads)

Title: The Mistake
Author: Wendy James
Publishing: 2012 by Penguin Australia
Genre: Fiction; Mystery
Progress when DNF'd: 42%
Format: Paperback
Source: Borrowed from library
Goodreads' Rating: 3.55 / 5 stars
My Rating: 💜💜
Goodreads' Synopsis:

Twenty-five years on, Jodie has built a whole new life and a whole new family. But when a chance meeting brings the illegal adoption to the notice of the authorities, Jodi becomes embroiled in a nation-wide police investigation for the missing child, and the centre of a media witch hunt.
Did something sinister happen to Jodie's baby the night it was born? The fallout from Jodie's past puts her whole family under the microscope, and her husband and daughter must re-examine everything they believed to be true.

Review:

I can't review this book fully, as I didn't even get half-way through it. The Mistake has been on my Goodreads TBR shelf for years so I thought that I would give it a go when I found it at the library. The synopsis sounds interesting enough so I thought it might have been a good read, and it may have been if the story moved a little faster.
I just couldn't get into the story, or the lives of the characters. Jodie herself is a little odd. Angus, her husband is some big-shot lawyer that is suffering from frequent panic attacks. Her mother-in-law is a complete cow, her daughter is a teenager who is experimenting with pretty much anything and everything and who is a little off the rails, and her son who is really young so he is not in it all too much.
Jodie had a baby when she was nineteen and gave it up for adoption but the adoption was illegal. She really should have known better to be honest..you fall pregnant at that age and carry the baby to term, you would have the details of what you are planning on doing with the baby organised before you have it. I know she was scared and alone, but at nineteen, surely she had more sense than to give her baby to complete strangers on the word of a nurse who she didn't know. I'm sorry, I just don't buy it.
I did want to know what happened to the baby, but the story was just so slow and it kept jumping back and forth from present to past, and usually I enjoy that, however, in this case it was annoying. I really just wanted James to get to the point of her story.
I tried really hard to read this book to the end, but I just couldn't do it.,

Has anyone else read this book? What did you think?? I hope that others enjoyed it, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. I would love to discuss your thoughts and opinions though!

Thanks for reading my DNF Review of The Mistake by Wendy James!
